New Year, TRUE You: Stepping Into Your True Self in 2020

2020 is a major year! Not only are we embarking on the journey of a new year but on an entirely new decade! If ever there was a time to discover your truth and begin embodying it, now is that time! With so much influence from friends, family, the media and outside world in general, it can be sometimes challenging to know what our own truth is and to follow it. Here are some of our top tips for aligning with and embodying your truth in 2020!

1. Meditation

One of the absolute greatest ways to get to know yourself a lotta bit better is to tune in with meditation. Often times when we start learning the art of meditation we use what is called guided meditation which is a voice recording that someone creates and you follow along with it. Guided meditations are a beautiful way to get started but when you're ready to tune in just a little bit deeper try meditating without someone else's guidance to tap into your own guidance system and inner knowing. I like to begin my meditation practice by calling on a higher power, inviting my higher self to move in me, as me and through me. And then I ask: What would you have me do today? Where would you have me go? What would you have me say? And to who? And then you wait. At first this is challenging we start to feel like, am I doing this right? Why aren't there any answers? This is silly. And then the mind takes us off on a tangent, I forgot to do the laundry! I have to make sure I am not late for the meeting at work! And so on. Each time you find yourself in this type of tangent take a few deep grounding breaths and again call on your higher self. Eventually the wisdom that you are looking to receive will come through. Maybe not the first time, or the second time but soon enough.

2. Yoga

It's no surprise that the practice of yoga is suggested here as a way to connect with the truth of who you are! The combination of breath and movement allows us to get out of our heads and into ourselves. Here we learn our physical bodies limitations. And here there is no distraction from our thoughts or emotions. It is very easy to avoid the difficult aspects of ourselves with distractions like TV, Social Media, Work, etc. But the moments on the mat force us to lose the distractions and instead be with ourselves, not with our friends, or our family, or our coworkers but with our one true self. Yoga is also designed to teach us to surrender, to let go of physical tension, mental tension and even emotional tension. When we surrender things that do not serve our highest self, we release the things that keep us separated from our true essence. 3. Journaling

If you find that your mind is far too busy and you can't seem to settle into the stillness and silence that you so deeply desire in yoga and meditation, journaling might be the perfect solution for you! As with meditation when many of us get started with the practice of journaling we have this feeling like "I don't know what to do" or "I don't know how to get started". The best advice that I have for starting this practice is just to start and to not judge yourself in the process. With all of these practices there is no good or bad way to do it, no right or wrong way to do it. All that we do here is explore and start to learn what best serves us. You can even start by writing on paper "I'm not exactly sure how to get started here", if that is what you're feeling write that down and continue writing down your thoughts, emotions and experiences. After some time you will find that the practice you once struggled to find even a single word will turn into a routine of pages and pages, seemingly overnight. All you have to do is begin.

4. Attend a Retreat

There are about 75 million retreats currently being offered worldwide (that isn't an actual statistic, I just made that number up). But realistically there are retreats all over the world, on every topic that you could even think of. Meditation retreats, healing retreats, silent retreats, feminine power retreats, intuition retreats, etc. etc. etc. There is really something so powerful about stepping away from all of the distractions and all of the outside influences for a week or even just a weekend! The beautiful thing about retreats is that, if you are unsure how to start connecting with your true self you will have a full experience of being guided by someone who has tools to help you find that connection that you so deeply desire.
